The Lion Monument in Lucerne commemorates the Swiss mercenaries who, serving the French King Louis XVI, lost their lives during the French Revolution at the Tuileries Palace in Paris .
The rock relief was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn. The inscription above the Lion reads Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti (“To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”).
